Simplified Speech #152 – Do you celebrate any international days?

 International Days

  • National Ice Cream Day
  • Women’s Day
  • World Press Freedom Day
  • World Philosophy Day
  • International Friendship Day
  • Sisters Day
  • Music Day
  • Book Lovers Day

there are two days that we don’t have in Canada or the USA, in North America.
We just have the two individual days, one for mom, one for dad.

어린이날은... 매일 매일이 어린이날이니 뭐 ㅋㅋ

when I was a kid, I remember asking my parents, like,

“Mom and Dad, why isn’t there a Children’s Day?”

There’s a Mom’s Day.

There’s a Dad’s Day, why isn’t there a Children’s Day?

And my folks would always answer,

“It’s because every day is Children’s Day. You guys are spoiled every day.” lol

to raise awareness

A.That's an interesting bracelet you're wearing. Is there any special meaning to it?

B. Yeah. It's to raise awareness about the struggles of refugees around the world.

A. What's the name of the organization that sells the bracelets?

B. Give me a secone. I'll text you the link.

to be a riot

A. How was the comedy show you saw yesterday?

B. It was a riot. The performers had us rolling on the floor.

A. Good for you. I'm a little angry I missed it.

B. Don't worry. They're coming back for a show next month.

Just because

A.I see that you bought the laptop in red.

B. Yeah. Do you like it?

A. Sure. But I thought you really wanted to buy the silver one. What did you choose the red?

B. Just because.

A. What do you mean?

B. Just because. No particular reason. When I saw it at the store, I switched to the red one.

avant-garde.

A. We’re going to a fashion tomorrow night, and we have a free ticket to give away. Do you want to come with us?

B. I’m not really into fashion. You might want to give that ticket to someone else.

A. Actually, the show isn’t just about fashion and clothes. They really put on a performance. They play interesting music. The whole thing is very avant-garde. I think it’s something you would like.

B. OK. It sounds like I should give it a shot.

cutting edge

A. Can you help me a second? I don’t know anything about cars. Why is this car twice the price of this other one?

B. Let’s see. The expensive one is an electric vehicle.

A. Is that it?

B. No. There are tons of differences. The electric car is cutting edge from top to bottom. From the material of the car to the artificial intelligence on the dashboard to the quality of design, it’s a state-of-the-art vehicle.

to be out there

A. How did you like that science fiction movie I suggested you watch?

B. Oh my! It was crazy.

A. I told you.

B. I know, but I didn’t expect it to be so out there.

A. When I first saw it, I had to re-evaluate my entire life.

B.Geez. I think I’m doing the same right now.

to do some digging

A. Don’t forget, there’s a dress code for the party tonight.

B. A dress code? Nobody told me that.

A. Well, I’m telling you now. You have to wear the ugliest, most outlandish sweater

B. What? I think I’ve thrown all of those out already. I guess I’ll have to do some digging to find something.

It just so happens

A. Are you calling a taxi?

B. Yeah.

A.Oh. Where are you going?

B. I’m heading to 4th Street for some business.

A. It just so happens that I’m driving to 5th Street in a few minutes. Do you want a ride?

B.Sure! Thanks.

stands out

A. Did you see Jessie’s hot pink hair?

B. Of course. How could I not notice her?

A. I know. She really stands out in a crowd.

B. For sure. She was in an audience of 200 people, and she was the first person I saw!
